🌸 Vail, Colorado: A Summer Escape with Swiss Charm
Category: North America
By Rose-Tinted Journeys
Luxury travel, best served chilled.
Vail in the summertime is heaven on earth. Whether you’re a Colorado local or visiting from afar, a few days in this alpine village will leave you completely smitten. The crisp mountain air, flower-draped balconies, and Swiss-style architecture transport you straight to Europe — no passport required.
Set along the banks of Gore Creek, Vail blends natural beauty with effortless luxury. Picture-perfect bike paths, world-class golf courses, boutique shopping, fine dining, and a lively après scene — it’s the kind of destination that makes you want to slow down and stay awhile.
🏔️ The Villages: Vail Village & Lion’s Head
Vail is split between two charming villages: Vail Village and Lion’s Head. They’re about a mile apart — a 15-minute stroll or a scenic bike ride along the river connects the two. Keep your eyes peeled for elk, foxes, and marmots that sometimes make an appearance along the trail.
Vail Village is the original — vibrant, walkable, and full of character. Think cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and some of the best dining in the Rockies.
Lion’s Head, just west, is slightly quieter and more family-friendly, but every bit as beautiful.
🍽️ Where to Eat & Drink
Mountain Standard (Vail Village)
Hands down, my favorite spot in Vail. Nestled just below Sweet Basil on the river, Mountain Standard is as cozy as it is stylish. Grab a seat on the patio, order a cocktail, and take in the sound of the creek rushing by. The wood-fired menu is consistently excellent — and yes, it’s my #1.
Vail Chophouse (Lion’s Head)
For an evening that feels like pure mountain magic, head to Vail Chophouse. Live music on Friday nights, sweeping slope-side views, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel instantly at home. Whether you’re craving a perfect steak or just a crisp salad and a glass of rosé, you’ll find it here.
Tavern on the Square (Lion’s Head)
Located at the base of the Arrabelle Hotel, Tavern on the Square is casual, social, and full of energy — a great spot for brunch or après-ski-style afternoons (even in summer). Sit outside, enjoy live music, and soak up the sunshine.
Vintage (Vail Village)
Go for brunch — stay for the charm. Vintage feels like a café in the south of France, with tiny bistro tables, hummingbird feeders, and a menu that’s impossible to resist. Try the Blackberry French Toast or Southwestern Eggs Benedict, and don’t be surprised if you end up coming back the next morning.
Sweet Basil (Vail Village)
A Vail institution — and yes, the Kardashians recently made it even more famous. Elegant, intimate, and perched above the river, Sweet Basil offers a small but powerful menu. Start with a cocktail and the Whiskey Maple Pork Belly Bao Buns — they’re legendary.
Pazzo’s Pizzeria (Vail Village)
For something low-key, Pazzo’s is a local classic — the kind of no-frills, perfect-after-a-hike pizza spot every mountain town needs. It’s been around for decades and (thankfully) hasn’t changed a bit.
10th Mountain Whiskey & Spirit Company (Vail Village)
End your evening here — whiskey, live music, and the sound of the river. It’s as authentically Vail as it gets.
🏡 Where to Stay
Lion Square Lodge – South Tower (Lion’s Head)
Managed by Vacasa, this is one of my favorite places to stay in all of Vail. Try for a balcony room — some open right onto the green lawn at the base of the gondola. The lodge has an outdoor pool and hot tubs overlooking the river, plus unbeatable access to both the mountain and the village.
Vail Marriott Mountain Resort (Lion’s Head)
If you prefer a full-service resort vibe, the Vail Marriott hits the mark. Tucked along the river beside the Ritz-Carlton Residences, it has everything: a pool, hot tubs, fire pits, bike rentals, live music, and a coffee bar that’s perfect for early mornings before a ride or hike.
For dinner, don’t miss their Bone-In Ribeye for two and Banana Pudding — both unforgettable. Pair it with a perfectly balanced Old Fashioned or a crisp glass of rosé and you’ll understand why this place is always buzzing. Reservations are highly recommended, though bar seating is usually available.
🌿 Final Thoughts
Vail in summer is an experience that lingers — not just for its mountain views, but for its energy, elegance, and easygoing rhythm. Whether you’re exploring wildflower trails, shopping in the village, or toasting a sunset by the river, Vail feels like Europe with a Colorado twist.
And once you’ve been here in summer, you’ll understand why locals secretly prefer it to winter.
